Macdonald's designed a custom single-hand brake and steer lever for a Ki Catalyst 5 wheelchair, enabling independent braking and steering with one hand.
Design Challenges
- ADI disc brakes unavailable for this model
- Must work alongside Smoove powered assist
- Client needed fully self-operated braking and steering
- Limited to right-hand operation
How It Works
The lever operates like a joystick:
- Push forward — activates both brakes
- Push left or right — engages individual brakes proportionally for steering
- Rubberized interface absorbs shock and provides tactile feedback
